Private Dreamwork with Toko-pa

“Dreams are impartial, spontaneous products of the unconscious psyche, outside the control of the will. They are pure nature; they show us the unvarnished, natural truth, and are therefore fitted, as nothing else is, to give us back an attitude that accords with our basic human nature .”

– Carl Jung

What to expect in a Dreamwork Session

A Dreamwork session is a collaboration between you and I to understand the medicine your dreams are offering you. Together we explore your dream’s tapestry of symbols, building bridges back to your waking life through your own associations. First, you will tell me the story of your dream and I might ask you some clarifying questions. Gently then, we unearth the dream’s treasures, bringing its wisdom into consciousness.

Because these are often tender waters, you decide how deeply to dive. Every session is different, just as every dream is unique. But the greater the dreamer’s courage and honesty, the more rewarding the collaboration will be.

In my way of working with dreams, the dreamer is always the expert and we will both know a path is right when it resonates for us both.

What is a Dreamworker?

A Dreamworker is like a midwife of the psyche. While it is you, the dreamer, who does the real labour, my job is to help birth the wisdom from your dream into waking life. The way that I do this is by asking artful questions. Most indigenous traditions have such a person in their culture, though they are found under many different names; shaman, crone, medicine person, witch, healer, or analyst – they all perform the same sacred function – to guide you into deeper relationship with your essential nature.

When you are at a crossroads; no longer what you used to be and not yet what you will become, you will find me there. My role is to sustain your vision of wholeness, and hand you back what may feel like the jumbled pieces of your Self in a more harmonious order.

Ethics & Confidentiality

Using an approach I call Courtship, my emphasis is on asking questions about the symbols in your dreams that bring their concealed wisdom into the open. I follow the dreamer’s pace and integrity, recognising the dreamer as the decision-maker regarding the significance of the dream.

As stated in the IASD code of ethics, “Systems of dreamwork that assign authority or knowledge of the dream’s meanings to someone other than the dreamer can be misleading, incorrect, and harmful. Ethical dreamwork helps the dreamer work with their own dream images, feelings, and associations, and guides the dreamer to more fully experience, appreciate, and understand the dream.” Indeed many dreams have multiple meanings, and I draw on a variety of skills for reaching those layers, including Sufism, symbolism, mythology, empathy, ritual, storytelling, and more.

I also recognise and respect many dreamwork traditions from around the world. One’s social and cultural influences are certain to show up in your dreams, so I always take my lead from the dreamer’s associations instead of overlaying my own cultural influences on another’s images.

The dreamer sets the pace, and it is always their choice how deeply we dive. It’s important to know that strong emotions often arise in the course of the dreamwork, and they are encouraged and welcomed in the safety of our container. Anything shared within the context of our session remains private and confidential.

Dreamwork outside a clinical setting is not a substitute for psychotherapy, or other professional treatment, and should not be used as such. If we determine in the course of our work together that you’d be better served by a mental health professional, I will do my best to refer you.
